Food sneaking

Food sneaking

Its come to that time again where we have found out that Matt has been sneaking food. It isn't always easy when we get here we always wonder what should we do?

Usually keeping him out of the kitchen will help as this is his favorite place to hang out and it isn't a good place for him to hang out. We don't have a lot of food lying about it is usually in the fridge or the cupboards but for him being allowed in the kitchen he is allowed in every cupboard and the fridge right? NO

The only reason he is allowed in the kitchen is that it is a little nook kitchen, it is open to the rest of the house and in fact you have to walk through it to get to the other side of the house.

It is a nice lay out and works mostly for us, but when Matt gets like this we begin to have more issues, more seizures, more sneaking food and more irritability.

Matt still doesn't understand that just because he is now allowed bread, cookies, chips and more it doesn't mean he is allowed all of them and anyone he wants so he ends up eating gluten and we end up in a lot of trouble.

So here we are having to monitor him even more again while he goes through this thought process, does he understand? Does he know we are trying to help him? Does he know that we are doing our best and not just trying to be mean? I hope so but I am unsure.

All I can do is remind him to not help himself to food even the ones he knows he can have because then he believes he can have it all. Remind him he has to stay away from the kitchen walk through but stay out of it except to bring his dishes to the sink and hope he remembers this, hope he believes us.

It isn't always easy and usually always happens when he has been focused on food so much that he believes he can have it all, believes he is always hungry, cant think of anything but his next meal, even if he has snacks in between.

You see when Matt gets into this thought process he see's everyone else eating and thinks he should be as well so if he has breakfast at 6am when he wakes up he will want something when we all eat a little later and then when Mike wakes up to he will want something. After snack he will come and say I will be waiting for lunch, after lunch it will be I will be waiting for dinner. This is from one of his disabilities everything has its time and food is his focus. He watches the time and will come and tell me it is almost lunch time, it is almost dinner time and no matter what you say to him, he will not understand why he cant come tell you, he doesn't realize that this isn't a good thing and he needs to just got focus on something else.

This is all part of life with Matt it is always something to work on, in this moment it is trying to find a way to keep him out of the kitchen.
